The Tax Myth – Will Democrats Raise Your Taxes?

Time and time again I hear this misconception – the Democrats (Obama) are going to raise our taxes!!! If John McCain becomes president, then… we’ll pay less taxes!

Well, from the Washington Post: (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/09/ST2008060900950.html)

According to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are both proposing tax plans that would result in cuts for most American families. Obama’s plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy. For the approximately 147,000 families that make up the top 0.1 percent of the income scale, the difference between the two plans is stark. While McCain offers a $269,364 tax cut, Obama would raise their taxes, on average, by $701,885 – a difference of nearly $1 million.

McCain vs. Obama Tax Plan

And, in case you think that one source is not valid, take a look at:

http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/11/news/economy/candidates_taxproposals_tpc/

John McCain will lower everyone’s taxes, but unless you make more than $226,000 per year, your taxes get lowered a lot less than the wealthy. Under Senator Obama’s plan, mortal people like you an I (that make between $37,000 and $111,000 per year) will see more of a tax break with Obama than with McCain!!!

It’s this Karl Rovian misconception, that all to often goes unchallenged by cable news pundits, that somehow John McCain is going to cut your taxes. Reminds me of the notion that Saddam Hussein caused 9/11. Thankfully, the Internet continues to provide us a means to debunk the inane claims of the ridiculous right.
